«Aucune époque ne saurait être reproduite que par ses propres artistes, je veux dire les artistes qui ont vécu en elle. Je tiens les artistes d'un siècle pour radicalement incompétents à reproduire les choses d'un siècle précédent ou futur, autrement dit à peindre le passé ou l'avenir. C'est en ce sens que je nie l'art historique appliqué au passé.»

"No age can be reproduced by any artists other than its own, by which I mean the artists who lived in it. I hold the artists of a given century to be radically unable to reproduce the things of a preceding century, or one yet to come, in other words to paint the past or the future. It is in this sense that I reject historical art applied to the past."
